This set of two paintings are an invitation into a very private/intimate world of despair. These paintings speak to an inner world with little hope or joy and the colours reflect this reality as does the pared back surroundings in which the man sits tight with his back to the wall. His downward glaze maybe speaks of shame as does the general air of defeat in his demeanour.
The second painting of the set is the same corner but the man has gone, has he died? Did he kill himself? or did he get up and leave? These questions are intentionally unanswered and we simply being asked to stay with not knowing and in not knowing we are also being invited to invoke our empathy and suspend our judgement.
