In this series of paintings, the first two paintings imply an area of exclusion, an area that we are not invited in to. And indeed, the posters and signage suggest the high hoarding barrier of a building/construction site. Now, a construction site can be an alluring place of excitement and activity; something is going on and we don’t yet know what it might be and the signage warns us of danger and prohibition. In the first painting, there is an air of mystery with very little given away. However, there is a sense of coldness and loneliness which suggests that perhaps is not as it might be. The second painting replicates the linear structure of the first, A pale sky with a high blue barrier keeping us from entering. Except now there is a single forlorn tree which helps to emphasise the feeling of loneliness. The third painting is a radical conclusion to the series, where a portion of the barrier has been pulled down and we see is not what we expected. It is world of deep passions and despair and we are drawn in to the private world of suffering. suddenly we realise the first two paintings in a different context and see the blue barriers as someone’s attempt to keep up a front to the world and which finally defeats them in the third painting. The third painting is not without hope as represented by the upright phallic like pillar against which the individual rests. This suggests that perhaps the suffering is not permanent and that the individual has not been broken by it.
