This as yet, incomplete series of paintings is a visual exploration of the relationship between the spiritual and the sacred. The use of goldleaf and gold paint is a touchstone echoing the use of goldleaf in the construction of Greek and Ukrainian Icons. In Iconography the use of goldleaf is not purely decorative but is representative of heavenly light, i.e., the presence of God. In contemporary culture we often refer to the spiritual in secular terms so working with that, I wanted to explore the visual idea of the divine within the realm of the spiritual. In the paintings where gold paint or gold leaf is absent, I am asking the question: what is the spiritual without the sacred? Does it have anything to offer us? And for those people of faith these paintings pose the central question of faith namely, where do you stand if there no divine visible or none to be experienced directly by the senses? The use of abstract expression and geometric symbolism as a basis for exploration offers the freedom to enter these questions without the reliance or burden of stereotypical imagery.
